5. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Almost completely out of nowhere (despite Wolfenstein being a storied franchise and 2014's instalment being solid enough), The New Colossus is a monumental entry in both the first-person shooter genre, Machinegames' career and the franchise itself.

Delving further into the series' alternate history take on if Nazi Germany won World War II, Machinegames pull no punches showing everything from how the KKK would be appointed into more influential positions, to even an ageing, power-mad Hitler peeing in a bucket and accusing those around him of being Jewish spies.

On the gameplay front, backed my DOOM's Mick Gordon once again turning in a thunderous industrial metal soundtrack, every headshot, twin shotgun-fuelled sprint and machete swing hits home in a blur of severed limbs and splattered claret.

BJ Blazkowicz has gone from an arbitrary meathead to one of gaming's best written characters - the centre of a rebellion against an antagonistic force you truly believe as a threat and want to bring down.

Wolfenstein II will remain a triumph. The only knock against its success is Betheda's disastrous review policy almost suffocating it before launch. Don't let it pass you by.
