What do I do if I am having trouble downloading The Elder Scrolls Online on Steam?

If you are having troubled downloading ESO on Steam, you can try the following troubleshooting steps:

Check Steam's server status

Verify the Steam Server Status page here to ensure they are not undergoing maintenance or experiencing an outage.

If the servers are currently down, you will not be able to connect and download the game client until it is resolved.

Change Steam's download region

In some cases, you can resolve download issues by changing Steam's download region. To change your Steam client's download region:

  1. Open your Steam client.
  2. Select the Steam option on the top-left.
  3. Select Settings and navigate to the Downloads tab.
  4. Select a new region underneath the Download region option.
    1. For best results, try selecting a new region close to you.
  5. Restart the Steam client and try the download again.

Power cycle and then test your network

Turn off your network's modem or router for 10 minutes before rebooting and launching Steam.

Add Steam as an exception to your antivirus software

Each antivirus program is different, and we recommend you view your antivirus developer's website for full instructions on how to add exceptions.

The Steam application files that may require exceptions are:

  • steaminstall.exe
  • steam.exe
  • steamTmp.exe

Once you have added these exceptions, you should restart your computer and launch Steam. If issues persist, you can try disabling unique firewalls one-by-one to see if one of them is blocking the download.

Clear Steam's download cache

In some cases, you can resolve download issues by clearing Steam's download cache. To clear the download cache:

  1. Open your Steam client.
  2. Select the Steam option on the top-left.
  3. Select Settings and navigate to the Downloads tab.
  4. Click the CLEAR DOWNLOAD CACHE button at the bottom.
  5. Click OK, log back into Steam (you will be logged out), and try the download again.

Open Steam's Network Ports

To best access Steam, you should configure you routers and firewalls to open the following outbound ports:

  • TCP / UDP Ports 27000 through 27015
  • TCP / UDP Ports 27015 through 27030
  • TCP / UDP Ports 27014 through 27050
