Should Bethesda host a voice acting contest

In my recent discussion with me suggesting that Bethesda should host a voice acting contest, I got a little carried away on my opinion that the King of Skyrim's voice actor was disappointing. In this poll I decided to have the decision up to you.

In all seriousness as an extra rule tell me why you picked what you picked and explain it in full detail. I'll go first. I think that Bethesda should make a voice acting contest, because it would be a lot of fun getting to have a chance to play a role that is a lot of fun and that has some good writing. Plus the added benefit of having a good director does help when you are doing your lines.

I think the legal and practical issues would take all the fun out of it.

Voice acting is a job. Even if ZOS says they're not going to pay people for it and it's just a one-off they will still have to restrict it to people who can legally work in the USA, are over 18 etc. and go through similar checks as if they were actually hiring them. They'll almost certainly want to record in a studio (no, you cannot get really good audio quality using your phone, or even the headset microphone you use to chat to your friends) so that further limits it to people who can get to wherever they're recording.

It would also limit their ability to reuse characters. Unless you think they're going to get the random player to come back every time they want the character to reappear, or have them sound totally different each time? No, they'd just let you voice some random who will only be in one quest, so it doesn't mess up their story telling. (And so there's not much dialogue and it can all be recorded in one day, because even with people who know what they're doing and treat it as a job recording takes a long time.)

Finally who do you think is going to be picking the winners in this contest? It will be the same ZOS staff who currently choose and direct the voice actors, so they'll be going for something as close to what they currently get from a professional as they can manage, not the person you would choose. I doubt it will make a big difference in the end result.

Voice acting isn't just a fun thing that anyone can do because they have a nice voice. Maintaining a tone, a character, and actually acting all at the same time is hard, and it requires practice and training.

Some of the recent voice actors may not have been to your liking, and we've had some actors attempting accents that were perhaps beyond their current skill set (or so I've heard from people who know accents), but there is nothing worse than sitting in the studio with an actor you've booked for seven hours only to discover that they don't actually know how to voice act.

If ZeniMax and Bethesda had the resources, it would be great to have a contest! It's a fun idea. But imagine the time and money required. I imagine, it would just be too expensive and time consuming to run such a contest. Now, if I ran such a contest, I think I would create a scene with two characters, and then have contestants voice one or both characters from a provided script.

ZOS should give a lot more work to voice actor Mary Faber! She voices my favorite character in Tamriel!

I'd like to see ZeniMax and Bethesda create a webpage with advice for folks interested in voice acting/voice over. Of course, one might check the official websites: (1) ZeniMax jobs, or (2) Bethesda Game Studio careers. However, I don't see any postings for voice actors/VO. I wonder how they find their voice actors. Anyone know?

There are websites devoted to jobs for voice actors (don't know if it's okay, or not, to post URL).

Folks who want to voice acting jobs might consider creating their own self-marketing website, with examples of their work.

Anyway, it'd be fun to have a contest. But it'd be too expensive, I think.

Can't vote because for me it's neither no nor yes: I have nothing against it as it doesn't affect me, I will just not take part if it's added.

A contest would undermine the voice acting industry and would take jobs away from people who do this for a living. You see this problem quite a lot in the design industry. A company will put out a contest to get their logo designed. They're asking people to give them free labour for the mere chance of being chosen as the winner. It undermines the design industry and at the same time it's highly likely to provide the company running the contest with a substandard result. You get what you pay for.

I don't know how ZOS handles it specifically, but typically a game studio will contract with a recording studio, and the recording studio will put out a call for auditions and handle the recording itself. Maybe the game devs make the final picks from among the actors, or maybe the studio's casting director does; this will vary from company to company, I think. Voice actors are rarely part of the dev team itself.

For the fun of it, ZOS should hold a community voice acting contest. Winner gets a small part to act in the next Chapter and the other participants get a small prize (ie crates etc).

There already exists a contest to find voice actors. It's called an "audition".

It's got some of that early days Blizzcon cosplay (vosplay?) feel to it, so yeah why not? Less talking heads and more fan events at Quakecon I'm all for.
